Locations - St Michael's Street

"There was no opening through into George Street then. The street turned at a right angle and ran right up to the "Corn'', this "leg" being now christened St. Michael's Street."

[left] The Wesley Memorial Church at the end of St Michael's Street is actually in New Inn Hall Street. At that corner - on the left side where St Michael's Street and New Inn Hall Street join - was the location of the original St Edward's school which Kenneth Grahame attended. During Kenneth's schooldays there part of the school building collapsed and this triggered the construction and opening, in 1873, of the new St Edward's school on the Woodstock Road.

Behind the railings on the left, and a little out of the photo, is the Frewen Hall, also mentioned in the essay.
